What we enjoy most is searching for excellent new wines and importing direct from smaller growers. We poke around for undiscovered treasures, we sniff out the unknown gems, the up-and-coming growers. What makes us different is that we actually go there! Brief History: According to local legend, there has been a wine shop on this site for 70 years. 100 years ago there was a pharmacy. You can still see the original Victorian shelving. “I liked it so much I bought The Winery in May 1996” enthusiastic customer, composer David Motion told Harpers, The Wine Trade magazine. Since then we have been forging an independent path, now importing our entire, ever-changing range direct from smaller growers, from wherever our interest takes us. We have won various UK Press awards including the first “Most Innovative Merchant Award” in Which Wine Guide 2003.
Following trips to Tuscany, Burgundy, Champagne and Germany, new wines are arriving thick and fast. NEW from Tuscany - Brunello di Montalcino from Il Colle and Canalicchio di Sopra, Chianti from Fattoria Vicchio, Podere Ciona and La Marcellina. Pratesi's scrumptious Carmignano sold out in 3 weeks! Plus, by Boscarelli, the finest Vino Nobile di Montepulciano we have ever tasted.... Could it get any better? NEW from Germany - razor sharp, precise dry Riesling from Carolin and Erik Riffel in Bingen. Spicy offerings from the red slate cliffs at Erden on the Mosel by Andreas Schmittges. Everybody's favourite organic Rheingau by Asbach-Kretschmar. NEW from Burgundy - lovely Pernand-Vergelesses in red and white, Village and 1er Cru, by Denis Pere et Fils. ALSO two new Bio-Dynamic discoveries - Thiebault Huber in Volnay and former cattle-herder Sylvain Raphanaud who teamed-up with girlfriend Jane Bernollin in Gevrey-Chambertin. WINERY FAVOURITES BACK IN - from Provence, our favourite Rose, perfect for the British Summer, from the Negrel family at Mas de Cadenet in Cezanne country. Agnes Henry's chunky Bandol will be with us in days. ALSO - Amyot Champagne back in (after their pallet truck finally got fixed), the chunky characterful Hauts Lastours red Quercy and Jerome Coursodon's benchmark St Joseph in red and white. That boy just gets better and better! Twelve years on, we're still excited to be hunting for undiscovered treasures, sniffing out the unknown gems, the up-and-coming growers!
