What we enjoy most is searching for excellent new wines and importing direct from smaller growers. We poke around for undiscovered treasures, we sniff out the unknown gems, the up-and-coming growers. What makes us different is that we actually go there! Brief History: According to local legend, there has been a wine shop on this site for 70 years. 100 years ago there was a pharmacy. You can still see the original Victorian shelving. “I liked it so much I bought The Winery in May 1996” enthusiastic customer, composer David Motion told Harpers, The Wine Trade magazine. Since then we have been forging an independent path, now importing our entire, ever-changing range direct from smaller growers, from wherever our interest takes us. We have won various UK Press awards including the first “Most Innovative Merchant Award” in Which Wine Guide 2003.
2008 starts with a bang with wines arriving thick and fast following our trips to Champagne, Germany, California and the Rhone. We have a full tasting diary and a full itinerary for the next six months. NEW - RHONE - the 2002s and 2003s have passed through the system and we were excited by the 2004s and 2005s. Chateauneuf-du-Pape from Ronciere and Saint-Siffrein. Bio-dynamic Cotes du Rhone Villages by Pascal Chalon, made in his shed. NEW -CHAMPAGNE - we are loving our latest discoveries Champagne Christophe from the Aube and the...er...emmm...exuberantly presented Henry de Vaugency from Oger just south of Epernay. BACK IN - GERMANY - the autumnal Pinot Noirs from the Ahr by Adeneuer and Nelles BACK IN - Quercy, the cheeky mega-characterful red from the South-West of France PIEDMONT - Barolo by Mauro Veglio, Gianfranco Alessandria, Edouardo Sobrino and Osvaldo Viberti Pierre Breton from Bourgueil in the Loire Valley joined us at our November Tasting and blew us away with his bio-dynamic Cabernet Francs Plenty of excellent new wines to taste. We had what can only be described as the perfect review in May's Wine & Spirit Magazine. We are delighted. If you'd like a pdf of it, just let us know. Eleven years on, we're still excited to be hunting for undiscovered treasures, sniffing out the unknown gems, the up-and-coming growers!
