Welcome to The Winery

What we enjoy most is searching for excellent new wines and importing direct from smaller growers. We poke around for undiscovered treasures, we sniff out the unknown gems, the up-and-coming growers. What makes us different is that we actually go there!

Brief History:
According to local legend, there has been a wine shop on this site for 70 years. 100 years ago there was a pharmacy. You can still see the original Victorian shelving.

“I liked it so much I bought The Winery in May 1996” enthusiastic customer, composer David Motion told Harpers, The Wine Trade magazine.

Since then we have been forging an independent path, now importing our entire, ever-changing range direct from smaller growers, from wherever our interest takes us. We have won various UK Press awards including the first “Most Innovative Merchant Award” in Which Wine Guide 2003.

News

A Media Blizzard! Fergus Shanahan, Executive Editor of The Sun, joined us recently on one of our trips to Germany. He loved it and wrote it up in the travel section. We asked The Guardian to join us for an experiment to see if wine tastes different on different days of the lunar calendar. We tasted the same line-up of 8 wines on a leaf day and then on a fruit day. The results were overwhelming. The wines tasted better on the fruit day, more expressive, more exuberant, more vibrant. There then followed a whirlwind of interviews on BBC Radio 4, Sky News, BBC Breakfast TV and the BBC News Channel. Here's what we tasted. Georges Laval Champagne, Jo Pithon's Anjou Blanc Les Pepinieres, Asbach-Kretschmar Kabinett trocken, Rudolf Trossen's Schieferstern Riesling trocken, Pascal Lambert Chinon, Cyril Audoin Marsannay Longeroies, Volnay by Huber-Verdereau and Pascal Chalon's La Grande Ourse.
