31 Days of German Riesling 2014 – 1st July Tasting

You are invited to our next tasting on Tuesday 1st July from 17.00-21.00h at our shop in Clifton Road W9.

July’s “31 Days of German Riesling” is an initiative by Wines of Germany. As many of you know, we at The Winery are fairly strict observers of “365 Days of German Riesling” but, to kick off the celebrations, every wine in the line-up at the tasting will be Riesling.

To start the month with a bang, we’ll be featuring 4 of our 9 winners from the German Top 50.

6 of the winners are featured in our Top 50 dry Riesling 6-pack.

Studert-Prum’s Bernkasteler Graben Riesling Kabinett trocken was one of the winners – a beautiful example of high-toned, slate-driven, dry Riesling from the heart of the Middle Mosel.

Gerrit Walter worked at The Winery during his last year at Geisenheim, Germany’s top Wine University, since when his Riesling trocken has become a classic – it just flies from our shelves. We recently had to pick-up yet more of his Top 50 winning 2012.

The Kuhn family from Oestrich-Winkel are the most visible biodynamic winery in the Rheingau. Biodynamism is the extreme end of organic winemaking and viticulture where decisions are made according to the lunar calendar. Their style is utterly distinctive and we were delighted that their Jacobus Riesling trocken was another winning entry.

We decided to enter Reiner Flick’s Holle into the competition. It’s a full-throttle, oily Hochheimer Riesling. We loved the panel’s tasting note: “Gorgeous nose of jasmine and satsuma. Fresh, weighty and complex.”

Fred Prinz’s 2012 was another of the Top 50 winners and on Tuesday we will be showing his newly released 2013.

We’ll be kicking off with Joseph Laufer’s Zum Krug Riesling Sekt, proper sparkling dry Riesling from the heart of the Rheingau.

You may be surprised to see a red wine in the line-up. Pinot Meunier by von Racknitz in the Nahe. Don’t be alarmed – Pinot Meunier is called Schwarzriesling in Germany. Black Riesling.
