Sedella (Axarquia/Malaga) NATURAL

Our friend Nacho Leon, who makes Demencia, Pyjama and Taruguin, introduced us to Lauren Rosillo back in 2013. They were both over for the RAW wine fair. Lauren is an Agronomist with a degree in Enology. He has been making the wine for Familia Martinez Bujanda at their estates in Rioja (including the highly-regarded Finca Valpiedra), Rueda and La Mancha for almost 20 years. He writes papers and teaches at Albacete Agronomists Technical High School.
In 2006 he wanted to do his own thing, on the side. With 2.5 hectares of old Romé (a varietal that was close to extinction), Jain and Grenache vines he started Sedella, up in the cool slate hills inland from Malaga. He uses traditional techniques: Roman-style ploughs pulled by horse. Yes, there are French oak barrels but also Amphorae. His Sedella red ages beautifully. More recently he has bottled Laderas, a red Amphora wine and a wonderfully fragrant skin contact white fermented and raised in egg-shaped cement VATs. The vines were planted in 1940 and include Moscatel de Alejandría, Doradilla, Montua, Calona and tiny amounts of other local varieties.
